Growing food for Livestock!

Now we have a variety of livestock. Started with chickens, then goats, turkeys, ducks, more chickens, and now we got pigs! We are investing all of our money buying their feed and what do we get in return? Few Eggs a day... We are waiting on my goats to start producing milk, pigs to become bacon, chickens to become our fried chicken dinner... Dreams go on. However, they are not ready!

Because of the supply chain corruption and food shortage, gas price increase, COVID... Everything is going up!
When we started raising livestock, a 50 lb bag of scratch grains was $11. Layer crumble was about the same. Now, the price for a 50 lb layer crumble is about $20. It's crazy! Another example, two years ago, a bale of Alfalfa was $15, now $20. We have to do something! We need to grow their food!

So, this spring of 2022, we are going to dedicate a couple of areas to grow alfalfa, flax, wheat, chia, corn, oats, vetch, soybean... We want to feed them healthy stuff. I was going to blow up that spot to be a beautiful floral garden, but seems like I need to downsize my dream and deal with the reality! Let's see what we can do about that!

1/18/2022 We sprinkled livestock crop seeds on the Promised Land, and Sunflower Rows. We'll see how long it takes for the seeds to germinate in the winter! Water with overhead sprinkler every few days during the day when it's about 65-70 F. We have been monitoring the weather forecast. Morning temp does go down to about 25F sometimes, so when we expect cold morning, we try not to water anything.
