Desert Life Skills ... Pass it on!

Citrus Trees along the side of the street! I used to pick them and eat 'em on my way home from school! (Ehime, Japan)

Welcome!

What a change! Growing up in the Southern Islands of Japan,  all you gotta do is to sprinkle some seeds on the ground, and- Boom! You got tomatoes, cucumbers, watermelons, peppers... Plus I was surrounded by farmers of all types! Because of the tropical weather, I don't even remember seeing farmers watering their plants! My dad used to say "All you gotta do is smile! They will give you what you wanna eat!" I never had to worry about anything! Plus my grandparents and all relatives were farmers, fisherman, and restaurant owners. I grew up watching them and helping them on the field every weekend from stomping in the wheat fields, to picking oranges from the trees! Here in Mojave Desert, 70 miles out from Las Vegas, most would think that nothing grows here... Only thing thriving is a bunch of tumble weeds! I miss my hometown, and I really wish I could make that magic happen here in the desert! I know it's almost impossible with this desert climate, but I have been experimenting with what I can grow out here! This is my 3rd year in my 2.5 Acre lot, where we are working toward sustainable living every day!

Now, it's starting to come together, and I'd like to take you along for the journey! Desert farmers, and preppers- this is for you! My husband used to tease me that I had a "brown thumb, I can even kill fake plants!" But not anymore!!

This website is dedicated to teaching our next generation. I want to help the kids, and the world- everybody feeling like I did before.... Not sure if you have the skills to grow your own food, make some awesome food from scratch, or how to raise chickens and livestock? You've come to the right place!

The Corona Virus Pandemic was a wake up call for EVERYBODY! When it all goes down, what can you do to survive?? Do you know how to grow your own food in the desert? Do you know how to make some bread from scratch? When we are experiencing a shortage of supplies like bread, eggs, milk, meat... Will you scramble to look for it? Or will you be smiling collecting eggs from your own backyard and hopefully have the heart to share your eggs with your neighbors? The choice is yours! We would rather have the skills to make our food, and line our pantries than stand in line at the food pantry hoping that they have enough for me and my family!

I am nowhere near perfect! I am super impatient, so I tend to do things "differently" in the interest of time. We all learn from our mistakes on this journey, and that is the fun part! I will share my success stories, failures and learning experiences, and how I "make some stuff up"!

In "Cooking Show" I will break it down easy enough for children to follow. I will not use any fancy equipment! Just basic "Everybody has it" kind of kitchen tools, so everybody can follow my recipes without running to a box store or online to pick up fancy equipment!! I will be covering everything from quick and easy breakfasts, to Grandma's secret recipes, Southern comfort foods, dishes from around the world, and "fancy" dinners for special occasions! I know, you're saying-  "Ain't nobody got time for spending hours in the kitchen trying to make one dish!" As I mentioned before, I am impatient, too! Fast and easy meals, made simple! No culinary tricks required here!

Hope you enjoy! Together, we will become better everyday!
